What is a Cospas-Sarsat 406 MHz Beacon?
A Cospas-Sarsat 406-MHz beacon, also called a distress radio beacon or emergency beacon, is a radio transmitter that can be activated in a life-threatening emergency to summon assistance from government authorities.
Cospas-Sarsat 406-MHz beacon types:
There are three types of beacons used to transmit distress signals,
- EPIRBs (maritime use)
- ELTs (aviation use)
- PLBs (personal-based applications use)
How does a Cospas-Sarsat 406 MHz Beacon works?
- User activates beacon
- Satellite detects the beacon
- Beacon signal is transferred from satellite to LUT
- LUT transfers the beacon message and location data to its associated MCC
- The MCC transfers the Cospas-Sarsat alert message to the governmental authorities responsible
- The rescue authorities take action
Distress beacon:
A distress beacon is an electronic device that, when activated in a life threatening situation, assists rescue authorities in their search to locate those in distress.
ELT
Emergency Locator Transmitters are distress beacons that are fixed in aircraft.
EPIRB
Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons are for maritime use and designed to float upright in water.
PLB
Personal Locator Beacons may be used as personal distress beacons in all environments.
Why Should I Register My Beacon?
Registering your beacon may make the difference between life and death. By registering your beacon you allow search-and-rescue authorities in an emergency to retrieve crucial information about you, your aircraft or vessel, and people who can provide valuable information about you (your emergency contacts).
